I recently watched the first three Matrix films again after the concept of this ‘not being the real world’ presented itself multiple times in podcasts I’ve listened to over the past few months.
Henceforth, I was eager to return to the “source”.
It is (un)believable to think that we could very well be headed on the same trajectory as portrayed in the films. Especially with the progression of AI technology.
“The Matrix itself was developed by Artificially Intelligent sentient programs, most notably The Architect and The Oracle. Within it, all aspects of the world are simulated by different programs, and the humans within it are watched and controlled by the Agent programs.” - Matrix Wiki
After watching the films again and pondering the world around me, two questions formed about the emergence of AI:
By giving so much power to AI, are we handing over our freedom?
Could the human race potentially be enslaved by ever-evolving artificial intelligence?
For me, these are definitely questions worth asking.

It may - or may not - have seemed crazy to think such thoughts back when the films were made but it seems like a real possibility now.
In my opinion, for every good thing that artificial intelligence is/can be used for, there are several more sinister things going on or in the works:
History scrubbing on the Internet.
Cancelling/shadow-banning/censoring people on social media.
Promotion of agendas from government and unelected NGOs on search engines.
Government-sponsored news via AI news anchors.
These are things that are currently happening with the help of AI. So could it be possible for us to lose some freedoms due to a rise in this technology? Absolutely.
I’m not saying it is going to happen but if ‘the powers that be’ are able to use artificial intelligence to control narratives about certain things, scrub history in order to erase traces of information that do not support them, ban people from talking negatively about them online, promote their own information supporting the agenda via tailored search engine results and spread propaganda using controlled news anchors - more than they do now - it is conceivable that our freedoms could be taken away very easily through fear and group-think.
But what if AI was able to program itself? Couldn’t that take away more than just our freedoms? - Again, absolutely. A premise that was of course portrayed in the films.
As I said earlier, this seems like a real possibility now.
However, “The Matrix" isn’t just about AI. As a concept, it speaks to something much deeper, which will we take a look at now.
