Welcome to the Birth of Clarity newsletter on Substack.
I was listening to a podcast the other day and the hosts mentioned something about experiencing a ‘life review’ before you die.
Life review is a phenomenon widely reported in near-death experiences in which people see their life history in an instantaneous and rapid manifestation of autobiographical memory. Life review is often described by those who have experienced it as "having their life flash before their eyes".
They were using it to highlight porn and masturbation habits, with both alluding to the fact they would probably experience some shame about the number of times they viewed themselves masturbating to images on a screen.
I will talk a little about that below but having never heard of a life review before I thought we could dive a little deeper into it in this article.
I don’t know whether we experience such a thing before we die, or when we die, but it does raise the question; if you were able to view your life back at the end, would you be happy with how you lived or would you feel some regret?
It’s a big question I know but it is something I believe is worth thinking about.

If you use the life review premise with the example from the podcast hosts, would you be shocked at the number of times you viewed yourself masturbating to pornography?
Would you be shocked at the number of times you missed out on something else because you were watching porn?
Would you be shocked at how many times you normalised it in your life?
Would you be shocked at the lack of energy and how tired you were because you stayed up late watching it?
Would you be shocked at the things you watched?
With that thought now in your head, if you looked over your life so far, do you think that you’ve wasted too much time watching porn?
Do you think you’ve already wasted too much of your sexual energy masturbating into a tissue?
Do you think that porn has too much power over you?
If you answered yes to any of these then please check out this link and help yourself master your sexual energy and overcome the power that porn has over you.
Now that porn usage has been covered - something I believe would shock the majority of people if/when they review their life - let’s look over three key areas and get ready to answer some tough questions.
Health and well-being
With it being a new year, reviewing your life now has some extra relevance especially with many people using this time to get themselves in shape, join a gym or promise themselves they will lose weight, etc.
Look at where you are now and review your life so far. Now ask yourself these questions:
Have you kept your mind, body and soul in shape?
How many times have you complained about being overweight and not done anything about it?
How many times have you experienced stress because of your poor choices and continued making the same mistakes?
Have you tried hard enough to achieve inner peace?
Can you honestly say you’ve been good at looking after your health and well-being?

Interactions
As highlighted in previous articles, I’m worried about a lack of human connection especially with the advancement in technology.
So with that being said, have you managed to avoid the technology trap and interact with your fellow human beings?
Ask yourself these questions:
Can you say "love thy neighbour” has resonated with you throughout your life?
Are you proud of the interactions you’ve had?
Could you have been nicer to people?
Have you engaged more with your phone than you have with people?
Have you missed opportunities to talk to new people because of fear?
What meaningful connections have you made and where can you improve?
Have you been loving in your interactions?
Good deeds
One thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is the importance of doing good deeds for others. This can be people you know or complete strangers.
Doing good deeds for others during your life is one way of purifying your soul.
Ask yourself these questions:
Have you helped your fellow man?
Have you helped people less fortunate than yourself?
Have you raised money for a good cause?
Have you done something for someone else and not bragged about it?
Have you done something for someone else and not expected anything in return?
Have you shared wisdom with your fellow man?
Have you helped someone out with your time?
Have you volunteered?
Looking over these three areas, are there any other questions you could ask yourself? Is there anything that jumps out that you need to address now?
I hope this exercise has been useful. Rather than wait until the end of your life, I think it is important to look at your life now and make adjustments before that time comes.
